Skriveo runs on a key you own, from a provider you pick. Creating one takes about two minutes, needs no credit card, and costs nothing for everyday use.
Why your own key? Because it is what lets Skriveo have no server. Your text goes from your browser straight to the provider under your own account — there is no middleman to charge you a subscription, and nothing of yours to sit in someone else's database. More on how that works.
Either works, both are free to start, and you can switch at any time — or set up both and swap in Settings depending on the task.
One privacy difference worth knowing. Providers treat free-tier traffic differently from paid traffic — Google has historically reserved the right to use free-tier Gemini API content to improve its products, while paid-tier content is excluded. Skriveo never sees your text either way, but the provider does. If you handle confidential material, read the current terms for the tier you are on: Gemini API terms · Groq privacy policy.
Pick your provider below. Both take about two minutes.
Go to console.groq.com and create an account. You can sign up with an email address, a Google account, or GitHub.
No credit card is requested, and there is no Google Cloud project to set up.
Once you are signed in, look for API Keys in the left-hand sidebar. If you cannot see a sidebar, open console.groq.com/keys directly.
Click Create API Key. Give it a name you will recognise later — Skriveo works — and confirm.
The name is only a label for you. It has no effect on what the key can do.
Groq shows the key once. Copy it before closing the dialog. If you lose it, nothing breaks — just delete that key and create another.

Go to aistudio.google.com/app/apikey and sign in with your Google account. Any ordinary Google account works.
First visit only: you will be asked to accept the terms of service.
The button sits near the top of the API keys page. Google may ask which Google Cloud project to attach the key to.
Attaching a project does not enable billing on its own.
Google lets you reopen the key later from the same page, so this one is less unforgiving than Groq's — but copy it now anyway.
A new key normally starts on the free tier with no billing attached. If the same page offers to “set up billing” or “upgrade”, you do not need it for Skriveo — ignore it unless you deliberately want higher limits.

Same four steps whichever provider you chose. You only do this once.
Click the Skriveo icon in your toolbar, then Open Skriveo Panel. If you cannot see the icon, click the puzzle-piece button and pin Skriveo so it stays visible.
Click ⚙️ Settings at the top right of the panel.
Pick Groq or Google Gemini in the Provider dropdown — the key field relabels itself to match — then paste your key and click 💾 Save Configuration.
The model list refreshes from your provider as soon as the key is saved, so you always see models your account can actually use.
Open any article, select a paragraph, right-click, and choose Skriveo: Summarize. Pick a length. Your first result should appear within a couple of seconds.
That is the whole setup. You will not need to touch Settings again unless you change provider.
Almost always one of three things:
gsk_… key needs Provider set to Groq; an AIza… key needs Gemini. A key pasted under the wrong provider is always rejected.You have hit your provider's free-tier ceiling, not a Skriveo limit. The panel shows a countdown and a Retry button — wait it out and press retry.
If it happens often: switch to a smaller, faster model in Settings, select less text at a time, or add your other provider as a fallback and swap between them.
The list is fetched from your provider once a key is saved, and cached for a day. An empty list usually means the key was not accepted — re-check it. A 404 naming the model means that model was retired by the provider; open Settings and pick another. Re-saving your key forces the list to refresh immediately.
Gemini applies safety filters and will refuse some prompts outright, returning a block reason instead of a result. Skriveo passes that reason straight through rather than pretending the request failed. Try different text, or switch to Groq for that particular job.
The Skriveo menu only appears when text is selected — highlight some text first. It also cannot run on browser-internal pages such as chrome:// pages, the Chrome Web Store, or a blank new tab. Try it on an ordinary website.
Not to us — Skriveo is free while in early access, and the free feature tier stays free permanently. As for the provider: only if you exceed their free tier, and only if you have deliberately enabled billing on your account. A free-tier key without billing set up cannot generate a bill; it simply rate-limits you.
Yes. Skriveo stores a key per provider, so you can save both and switch in Settings whenever you like. Handy when one is rate-limiting you, or when you want Gemini's longer context for a big document and Groq's speed for quick replies.
